Problems with screen resolution

I am fairly new to IRIX, so I am a bit clueless at the moment. I have an old 19'' SGI display from my original Indigo. I got an 13W3 to VGA adapter to use it with my O2. The start up screen is fine, the boot screen is fine, the console screen is fine, but as soon as it starts the loggin in screen (I think as soon as it processes any window server configuration files), the display goes wired, either an unsupported resolution or a wrong refresh rate. Now my question is, how can I change the resolution??? I am running IRIX 6.3 on an R5000 O2. Is there somekind of key combination I can hold to boot the window server in a "safe mode" or something like that?
And last but not least (I am a REAL newbie, and sadly, I don't have all the manuals) I'd like to know how to enter the administration mode at the beginning. WHen the O2 boots up, there is this "The System is coming up" window with a button underneat called "Stop for maintainance"....but I have no mouse control at this point (which should be normal I guess)...so how do I get into this maintainance mode?? I tried pressing ESC like somebody told me, but it doesn't work.

I hope I am not boring you all to death with my newbie questions

There should be mouse control at that point and clicking "Stop for maintenance..." or pressing the Esc key should bring up a menu to select maintenance options.
Check the mouse & keyboard connections first since you will not be able to make any changes without input devices (unless you have network access to the system).
