my pc was custom-built for me (with windows98 se installed) with the aim of recording music in mind...unfortunately, i first noticed the problem with recording when i tried to record a .wav file from a cd...the sound levels were flatline...and this is the same with all other of my recording programs...

i don't understand this, because they all worked earlier, and i'm able to work with mp3s in my recording programs...

i believe it's a hardware/software conflict, but i'm at a loss as to where to begin looking...

if you are trying to record by sticking the CD out into the Line in, this is a very poor method, I would recomend getting software such as Audio Catalyst that takes the data straight from the CD and encodes it into Mp3, thus giving you the exact quality right off the CD.
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in , or have messed with : VC++, Borland C++ Builder, VJ++6(starting),VB-Dos, VB1 thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, Borland C++ 3(DOS), Borland C++ 4.5, HTML,Visual InterDev 6, ASP(WebProgramming), QBasic(least i didnt start with COBOL)

Karl,
If you rip to wave file then you should get exact quality, but going to mp3 isn't a loss-less procedure. It removes sounds that are masked by other sounds and also sounds that are above and below normal hearing. That's my two cents:)

Steve, Has anything changed with the computer from the time it was working to when it didn't? Can you detail exactly how you record the audio. Do you put the audio cd into your cdrom and use some kind of program to rim the music from it or do you have some sort of studio setup where you play instruments and it is feed into the computer?

fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

Audiocatalyst, ripps both to Wave then converts to Mp3, or you can rip right to mp3. if you rip to wave then to mp3, you have the option of normalizing the wave before conversion into mp3.
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)

Karl, I use AC as well and it does a very good job. What I meant to say is that an mp3 is not an exact representation of the sound on an audio cd. An mp3 is a compressed form of the audio. The audio is compressed in such a way that normal hearing should not be able to tell the difference between the mp3 and the original track. The way the compression is achieved is by removing sounds that are masked by other sounds and sounds that are above and below the threshold of normal human hearing. Masked sounds are sounds that are drowned out by other, louder sounds. For example a loud symbol crash would drown out a french horn. Sounds that are beyond the range of normal hearing would be bat sounds, they would be recorded, taking up space but we could not hear them.

fenris
fenris@hotmail.com

I know how an mp3 works, but if the sound doesnt make much difference, why not offer to use it, I dont quite see the exact goal he is after when trying to record right into the soundcard. I mean he could still least use AC to just goto a Wave and leave it there.
Karl
kb244@kb244.8m.com
<a href=
Experienced in : C++(both VC++ and Borland),VB1(dos) thru VB6, Delphi 3 pro, HTML, Visual InterDev 6(ASP(WebProgramming/Vbscript)
I was not able to use the sound on my HP Pavilion for speech to text, because could not make the recognition work, although created great .wav files.
Then, with crashes and lockups, moved to straight win98 in lieu of Win98SE and now the sound card is not available at all.
HP tech says HP "must have" changed the driver that Cirrus (chipmaker) provided, because the driver downloaded from Cirrus now won't run the sound chip on the motherboard. The HP support tech suggests I put in another soundcard, but there's not much room in this tight little package...
Guess my problems are going to be somewhat hardware specific due to proprietary modification of drivers (and firmware?) In my case, looks like this particular box has gotta go...(am I pouting?) unless someone has suggestions for making the Cirrus sound chip run correctly under Win98?? I need the sound card for speech to text transcription[critical], testing wav files for webpages, burning Barbershop practice CDs, etc. Right now, must work sound on Toshiba laptop, then transfer files thru the 98 box for uploads and CD creation. -nasty
--mcy
