I have been having problems with our Print Server. When I add a print queue, I get no error messages, and using the lpstat command, The print queue appears to be present. However, when I print something to that queue, nothing happens. No matter what queue I create, I always have the same problem.
When I make changes to an existing print queue (using SMIT) I get no error messages, but when I look at the configuration of the changed print queue, nothing has changed at all!.

I have tried several things, such as stopping and starting the qdeadon, cleaning up directories involved with printing (var/spool/qdeamon etc.), but nothing seems to work.

Our AIX-version is 4.3.1.0.

Can anyone help me make something out of this mess? I am completely lost.

Thanks in advance

Well you could delete the printer and readd it and see what happens...
does the job show up in the que but then doesn't print?

Is /var or / or /tmp full....?
You could get the latest drivers for
bos.rte.printers
and printers.rte
and see if that helps....

Have you checked that all daemons are up not just qdaemon?

stopsrc -g spooler
startsrc -g spooler
there are several daemons that need to start...not just qdaemon?
writesrv is one of them as is lpd
lssrc -a | more see if they are up?
was this a sudden thing? one day just stopped or never worked or what?
Did someone change something at the printer? like IP or type of connection?

You might try to check the remote setup again and see if anything sticks out at you

this document has trace info so you can try and track it down....
if it is a hpjet direct?

You could look in the /etc/qconfig file and see if there is any corruption? You didn't change the hostname or anything did you...? That will also cause problems...

When you cleaned the ques did you do the following:
ssue the following command: stopsrc -cg spooler to stop the printer
daemons(this stops three printer daemons not just the qdaemon)

ps -ef | grep qd
kill anything that is a fork or qdaemon( pio or qdaemon etc)
kill -9 pid (process id)

cd /etc
cp /etc/qconfig /etc/qconfig.orig

Remove all files in :
/var/spool/qdaemon/
/var/spool/lpd/qdir/
/var/spool/lpd/stat/
/var/spool/lpd/pio/ (only msg files need to be removed )
/etc/qconfig.bin (remove file...it gets regenerated when it
starts up...DO NOT REMOVE qconfig)

/var/spool/lpd/pio/@local (only msg files need to be removed.
These files are in 4.x version)
startsrc -g spooler to restart the printer daemons again. If a printer is down
enable the printer with either the qadm -U quename or enable lp2 .

Remote Printer Checklist

Check the following items for the host acting as the remote print server:

Make sure that all client machines (foreign hosts) are listed in the /etc/hosts.lpd file.
Make sure that the TCP/IP subsystem is running.
Check for the existence of the /usr/spool/lpd directory.
Make sure that the /etc/locks/lpd directory does not exist if the lpd daemon is not
running.
Make sure that both the lpd daemon and the qdaemon are running.
--------------

I guess we need to know more as in when it happened, did it ever print, what changed, are all daemons up, can you do a trace? can you ping, can you telnet there,
is the stream different that what is set on the printer pcl, ascii etc.....filesystem full?
etc....
sorry............don't know enough...but maybe the above will help you....
Good luck

Very good aixqueen you cover alot

I would like to know how he is setting the printer up? what kind of printer he has?
is the print queue down after he make the printer?
is it a standalone rs6000? or spframe?
are you using a 16 port concentrator?
is it a network printer?

I would check what Aixqueen said then if everything is ok on the qdaemon then please give more info like the question i ask.

good luck.
