I have a problem with the normal.dot in word97 and i can't resolve it! Everything i've done didn't help the problem keeps coming back

I tried a lot of things by example the renaming of this document, I've totally formatted the HD and reinstalled all the programs but the problem still comes back!!!!!
One thing I'm for sure it isn't a macro virus !!
I have the newest version of a virusscanner called Norman and that scanner should find it!!!

I hope somebody can help me?

(Sorry for my English it's not perfect)

Have you tried to delete normal.dot? Word will create a new copy if one is not present.

Yes I've deleted the normal.dot but it still won't work

a friend of my told me that it could be another existing document that is corrupted, but which document???? There are hundreds of them, if that's the problem how can I find that document.

Hi,

I'm having the same problem with Word 2000. Haven't gone as far as reformmating, but i've done the renaming normal.dot, which will only recreate another corrupt normal.dot. I've deleted the DATA key, and reinstalled the Office suite. But to no avail. If it is another document that has corrupted the template, perhaps it is the document which was opened prior to Word crashing.

I thought also that was the problem, but now I'm trying to make a batch file so if Word opened the normal.dot should be replaced.

thanx anyway!

I have a temporary solution maybe for Homerclese, and other visitors?

First I deleted the normal.dot from the original directory
then I started Word.
Now I have a new normal.dot this one I've copied to another save place.

and I made the batch file

@echo off
copy c:\normal\normal.dot c:\progra~1\micros~2\sjablo~1
c:\progra~1\micros~2\office\winword.exe

So everytime if I want to start Word I do it with the batch file

Before this thread goes any further, could someone please describe what the problem is? :-0

I have an intermittent problem w/ Word 97 at home. Periodically, when I try to start Word, I am told that normal.dot is corrupted. No viruses (virii?) present, Scandisk run to check for bad sectors, etc. When I delete the normal file, sometimes the error recurs immediately, sometimes it may not happen for a few weeks.

Is this the problem you are having?

Some things I've seen/heard:

Nimda affects Word even if you used a cleaner. Check it out at a good look at the files it affects and make sure it didn't affect yours.

When reinstalling Office, you MUST use Eraser and delete normal.dot files or it may not help at all.

Check the STARTUP folder that resides in the Office folders (NOT the Windows startup folder).

Use Start-Run and type:

winword.exe /a

and hit Enter. (You may need to include the path to Winword.) If this helps, you've got a file somewhere!

Other startup switches are at:
Other programs that can affect: Goldmine, Postage (I forget the actual name), and (believe it or not) Microsoft WORKS.

Some other stuff: Brainbench MVP for Microsoft Word
