Apologies for lack of technical details - But I wondered if anyone could help.

I have a website that has been working fine for years, and now all of a sudden, certain parts have stopped workining.

I've narrowed the problem down to the new IE6 service pack update from Microsoftt Update. Website worked before install, didn't afterwards. Tried it on two different computers to verify and same thing happened.

Anyway - The problem. My website ( has a text link (half-way down the main page 'example turnsheet' for anyone who wants to look). This opens a window. Once the window opens, you can right-click to bring up a fancy menu (Javascript I think). Clicking one of these icons (the book) should bring up another window which allows you to type stuff in and form-mail us the results. Now, this all worked fine before IE6 SP1, but now when you click the book icon, nothing happens. Absolutely nothing. It's really doing my head in. :(

Any ideas anyone?

P.S. works fine locally, just not when I'm viewing the site via the web.

Have you tried uninstalling SP-1? How you do that depends on your OS, I believe.

No - I've not tried uninstalling it, as I'm not too bothered by the problem for my own sake. The problem is that any of our prospective customers that have downloaded SP1 will not be able to view the sample of our product in all it's glory - We can't really expect them to uninstall SP1 just to view a sample, so we really need a fix for the problem. :-(

The thing is, I know it's definately SP1 that's causing the problem, as when I tried to access our 'example' on another machine it worked fine. I then installed SP1 and it stopped working.

You need to check and see if the service pack changed some of your settings around (MS is notorious for doing this in IE 5.5 service packs).

First, go to "Tools -> Internet Options".
Security tab:
Set "Internet Security" to Medium
Privacy tab:
Click advanced, tick the box for "override automatic cookie handling", set 1st & 3rd party cookies to "accept", and tick the last box for "always allow session cookies"
Connections tab:
Click LAN Settings at the bottom and in the next window, make sure "everything" is unchecked
Advanced tab:
Ensure JIT Compiler, HTTP 1.1, and SSL 2.0 & 3.0 are all checked - "HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections" should be unchecked

Did that work?

This URL offers a list of all the changes made in SP1. Since you are certain something in the update is responsible for the page coding to no longer work, maybe this list will be of assistance. Unfortunately, there's got to be close to 100 items in this list. ;[
Since you have no control over whether or not your potential visitors are going to have this update or not, I'd suggest reverting your page back to its previous state, at least until you've had a chance to determine if the problem is fixable on your side.

Thanx cdogg. Didn't solve the problem though!

Tried all the things you suggested, but no luck.

Even when the settings for my SP1 'enhanced' machine are *identical* to that of our other non-SP1 patched machines It still won't work.

Website Doesn't work when viewed on SP1 machines, does work when viewed on non SP1 machines.

Guess I'll have to trawl through Crisc's list :(
