Help. Everytime I start my Dell Optiplex GX 260 the new Hard ware wizard starts and tells me hat a new Pci device is being installed. Yet there are no new PCI hardware devices. When I go to the device manager i see a yellow exclamation and a yellow question mark that reads PCI device. How do I stop the New HArdware wizard from starting automatically. Help

OR better yet, find out what it is and get the proper drivers for it and install it.

That's a sure way of getting rid of the new hardware wizard.

VACUNITA

THANKS FOR THE TIP, HOWEVER, THE PROBLEM IS THIS. WHEN i GO TO dEVICE MANAGER WHERE i SEE THE EXCLAMATION POINT AND YELLOW QUESTION MARK AND i GO TO PROPERTIES THERE IS NO DESCRIPTION OF THE pci DEVICE BECAUSE THERE IS NO PCI DEVICE INSTALLED IN THE COMPUTER. sO THERE IS NO WAY OF KNOWINY WHAT THE pci DEVICE IS!?

Ahh I see. oh o.k. sorry about that.

Windows doesn't generally just generate phantom hardware it wants to install, so either there is something there that's been recently added but not properly installed, or its part of something else.

Was something done to the computer recently to prompt this? Maybe you re-installed Windows? Or something changed in the system?

According to the manual there are 4 PCI slots. There's nothing in any of them that may be contributing to the unknown PCI device?

If there are any PCI cards installed try removing them and booting up the system. If you don't get the prompt back then one of the things your removed is the culprit. Put them, back in one by one until the Hardware Wizard comes back.

Hello vacunita, FYI

I resolved the Phantom PCI device issue by updating the PC's chipset by dowmloading them from the Dell website. This cleared the yellow message marks in the Device Manager and also stopped the New Hardware Manager frowm starting during boot-up. THis remedy was suggested by a techie knowledgable associate of mine.

But wait theres more.......this PC now has another issue...
stay stunned.........

The phamtom PCI device is back. I was instructed to upgrade the chipset which is what i did and this resolved the issue with this PCI device. But then this PC crashed with the System 32 message when I resolved the sysyem 32 issue the PCI devie came back.
The Phantom PCI device shows on the devie manager. Its shows with a yellow exclamation and questions mark. When I disable it the New hardware wizard starts up everytime I start the PC, and again the Phantom PCI deive shows in device manger. This whole mess started as a result of trying to get rid of this @#%!!### Pci devie. There is NO PCI device in the PC!!!!! So I cant get drivers for it or Identify it................need help.

You said the chipset drivers cleared the problem. That means the drivers included a driver for your phantom PCI device. Which is not a Phantom PCI device its part of the motherboard that has not been properly installed.

You never did tell me if you had done something to the computer to prompt this behavior or if it just began out of nowhere.

Try installing the drivers again.

what bios version is reported?
i have a gx260 with version a09, no phantom pci devices here,
latest chipsetdriver from dell.

Vacunita/Lennon13

There is more to the story. My first Dell gx260 was having Motherboard issues from what I was told. So I picked up the same Computer case a Optiplex 260 (from thrift store) which had a faster processor. So I take the hardrive from the crashing PC and put it into the new bigger stronger faster Optiplex gx 260. That was when all the problems started.

On the brightside i reinstalled the chipset like Vacunita suggested and low and behold the Phantom PCI device is gone!! Hopefully for good.

New issue, under device manager I see:

" Universal Serail Bus Controller " underneath I see another yellow exclamation the reads:

!Universal Serial Bus ( USB) contoller, again with out any drivers or information?!

It was suggested to me to get a software called Evergren that i.d.'s all componets of the PC. Where would I get this Eveready software. What do you think?

No we are getting somewhere.

It seems the motherboard from the 260 you got at the thrift store had some built in hardware that was not installed on your original installation. Hence the unidentified PCI device.
Probably some minor feature in the second MB.

Oh by the way,,

I went to the Dell website input the servicetag number of my Winn 2000 Pc and got and updated chipset and Bios, then I updated my PC with this new information. The phantom PCI device is gone!!!!!! Apparently, the drivers must have been in the chipset and possibly for an onboard item. Anyway this issue has been resolved. Thanks to all who have assisted me. But wait theres more...............stay tuned.
