Hello,

I have a problem. In my indesign document i have black letter overlaying a photo for half of the letter and the other half has a white background. but in the PDF the upper part, which overlays a photo, of the black letters is darker then the lower part of the letters. so the color values of the photo blend with the black letters, so when press it, the upper part will be a darker green/black. how do i fix this? indesign must think as if the background of the letters is white in total. thanx in advance.

This is probably just an issue with color management and your screen display that will not appear in print. Try moving the text to a new top layer in the InDesign document.

...100% black by default will overprint any object, the colour values you mention for the photo will be added to part of the black letter...

...four options would be...

...to add an underpin of a process colour to your black letter, this is a bit dodgy though if the printer mis-registers on the press slightly the colour underneath will then hang out...

...or to make the black letter 99% black rather than 100%, this will then knock it out of the photo and print 99% black only. This is still as good as solid black when imaged to plate...

...in CS2 you have an option in preferences to also knock out 100% black if required, under 'appearance of black'...

...most of the time you will get away with black ink only set to overprint, this does depend on how big an area of ink coverage you are dealing with. In your case i would be inclined to leave it as overprinting...
