Hi folks,

We have F50 server here and I am trying to do 'fresh' installation using AIX 4.3.3. There is an old version of AIX on the box and in the past two of his disks have been corrupted and removed. There is a need to do refresh installation so that I can remove all old oracle data and AIX configured data. I plan to install Oracle on the box later this week but the installation progress is giving me so many problems.

As this is a new experience for me, when I turned the box on there is console asking me for login details. I then typed install_assist and chose the option to install using the latest software.

I followed the instructions given and installed four AIX disks, then it asked for first one followed by the third disk. Then it failed. After nearly two hours of installing, it failed and I am not certain why it failed. I got a message saying something like

installp -acgNqwX -d /dev/cd0 -f File 2>&1

This does not make any sense to me at all.

I believe there is a menu where you can do 'fresh' installation (Welcome to Base Operating System Installation and Maintenance) but I can't seem to find it through smitty? Is there a key function that I should press when the box is booting?

There are only two key mode on F50 and I think they are service and not serviced key modes (I could be wrong there).

I need to bring up the Installation and Settings menu so that I can chose the first option where I can do 'New and Complete Overwrite'.

Hope you can help me here.

Thanking you all in advance

Regards

First, how was Star-Wars ? I'll be seeing it Saturday.

Secondly, put the CD in the CD-ROM drive, boot the machine. When you see the RS/600 RS/6000 ... ... screen, press F1 on a graphical display, or "1" on a text display.
From there, select "Multiboot", then "Install From".

Follow the prompts/make your changes to the options, and let it run.

Hi bjverzal

Many thanks for your inputs, will try it out now.

As for Star Wars, we saw it last night, and I have to say it is a lot better than the first movie but not as good at the original Star Wars movie which was very intense. As you know it focused a lot on the story of Anakin and Padme but it was interesting to see how Empire rise in power. The amazing thing is seeing all these Jedi Knights fighting, all those lightsabers waving in the air. This film has answered some of the questions from the original three Star Wars movies.

I will stop now as I do not want to ruin your story, enjoy the movie this weekend. I'll be seeing it again soon.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi,
Just boot the system with the 1st AIX installation CD. It'll take you to "Welcome to Base Operating System Installation and Maintenance"

HI again,

I have managed to install the first disk (out of 4) using 'installation and maintenance' mode, but there was no instructions requesting for the other three disks, should I install it manually?

Do I do it through smit?

Pls advice.

Many thanks

It will only ask for what it needs. When you run cfgmgr after install, it will list any additional filesets required.

Hi KOG,

I'll ususally use the first AIX cd during booting up and press F5 after hearing the clicking sound on my graphical monitor. Then follow the menu as how you want it to be install. Usually it will only take the first Cd for normal installation. But you need to install additional filesets since you want to install oracle into the server. You can use #smitty installp on the command line after finish tih the installation. #cfgmgr will also guide you for addtional filesets needed for your server.

cheers.

I prefer pressing 5 on serial consoles and turning key to service mode on key-equipped machines along with F5 on graphical consoles, and removing tapes from drives before booting, as tape-scans are very slow even if it does not boot from them
