Problems with imported Illustrator art

I am able to successfully import Adobe Illustrator art into Max 5. But some of the text elements of the imported art come in solid. For instance, the inside triangle of an upper case "A" doesn't show through. I've tried to subtract the elements using a Boolean operation with no luck.
The reason I'm not entering the text objects in Max is that there an many, many text objects and it would take forever directly in Max.

Any advice?
