Hi,

I'm new to Linux and I'm trying to setup an IMAP server to take over some dated UNIX machines.
I've installed IMAP and configured sendmail.
When I test IMAP form the hosting machine I recieve:
* OK ............

and I have read that this indicates the service is running. My problem is that I cannot telnet to the IMAP port (143) from any other machine, or configure my mail application to contact the server.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Please help!

Are you running a firewall on the server? Try disabling it with [tt]iptables -F[/tt] or [tt]ipchains -F[/tt] depending on which one you use.

If you have a router, you will need to forward that port to the server's ip.

Guy's,

Thanks for teh info. but I'm really new to this stuff and could do with a little more guidence. when I run iptables -F or iptables -F I recieve command not found. How do I test if I have a firewall running?.

I'm in a big organisation setting this up on a domain. I do have to go through a server to deliver external mail but if I'm a member of the domain then I still should be able to telnet to the IMAP port, shouldn't I?

Any help would be great!

Cheers,
