Problems with .htaccess

Hi,

I've just started using my own web server, and am trying to set the system up to allow passworded directories and custom error pages. But when I set the following directive:-

<Directory /home/wherever/public_html>
AllowOverride All
</Directory>

All I get from the php scripts is a server 500 error page.

Any help is much appreciated,

Does the script have executable permissions(755)? I presume this is only for the script execution because I see no code for password protected dirs.
