Problems with Exchange email read messages

This is my problem. We are having a problem with read and unread messages in some users mailboxes. It is only one some of the users and they are all using blackberrys. Now I know why the messages are comming up as read is because the blackberry Service that we are using is popping our server to get the messages. Once the Messages are popped off the server they are marked as read. Is there a way you can change this so that when the Message is popped it does not change from unread to read.

The only method I was able to find was to manually switch messages back to "unread" by using the trackwheel menu from the Messages screen.

If the messages are already coming in as "read", then perhaps a setting on the server would require to be modified.
