I am currently running an 8500GT by xFx on an EVGA 680i motherboard, and I have all the equipment required to run through DVI, but when I switch my monitor over through DVI it says there is no signal, i've reseated the card several times, and I've always handled it gently but it still wont work, I tried to see if I could get my s-vid out to work with my monitor but still it wouldn't. I dunno if I my video card is defective or what, but I would like to be running DVI instead of analog with VGA. Anyone have any ideas? I've def. run out of them.

Thanks guys!

Also, my monitor is a Gateway. It is very new, 24" widescreen, running 1920x1200 res.

I've updated my drivers and everything else I could think of. If anyone could help me, that'd be great!

The 8500 is about the first generation of graphics cards to have a DVI connector. There must be a way to tell the card to use the DVI out, instead of analog. The detection may not be automatic.
You may see these settings in the support packages like Hydravision, that enable you to even run out of both the analog and the DVI monitor at once. This may now be part of the Catalyst application now.
I don't think that 1920 x 1200 is supported by the 8500 though. Your monitor would normally try to resize itself to the different format, but you may want to try different resolution and see if the monitor catches it.

I'll try different res. but im 99% positive my 8500 supports 1920x1200....

i guess we'll see. think there is a chance its defective? also, any programs I could use to test my DVI out or use it for switching to DVI???

just trying to see if I have any options....thanks!

okay it does support 1920x1200. I set a lower res. and then tried DVI but to no avail. I'm gonna throw in a different card to see if its my monitor that isn't detecting the signal but I still think it's the card.

Thanks again!

Er, I assume that's a typing error as DVI has been around for years but 8500GTs have only been around for months. Or maybe you're getting confused over what card it is - you mention Catalyst and Hydravision in your reply which are both from ATI, but the 8500GT is one of nVidia's latest-generation cards.

Anyway, Dodge are you sure you're using the correct cable? You say "when I switch my monitor over through DVI" but does that mean you're powering everything off, disconnection the VGA cable and connecting a DVI one? DVI cables and connectors look like the ones on this page whereas VGA ones look like the ones on this page. Some monitors don't like it if you have both VGA and DVI connected at the same time.

Yes I have the correct cables. With my old viewsonic I had both VGA and DVI hooked up at the same time and it ran through DVI on its own (I'm assuming) I've tried DVI alone too and didn't work.

The DVI just wont work, I mean i have enough knowledge to know how to get the necessary equipment, and hook it up, but right now I honestly think my card is defective. I also mentioned my S-vid not working either, I tried it as an alternative but it doesn't work either. After work I'm gonna hook up that 7300 GS i have to factor out that my monitor isn't the problem. Kinda dead ending here :(

Any help is appreciated! THANKS!

Dunno what I did differently this time as from last time I hooked DVI up alone, but its working. I unhooked S-vid and VGA, left in the DVI and restarted and it worked......

hmmmmmmm

THanks alot you all!

One of the weird things about DVI is that each cable and socket can carry/output/accept analog, digital or both. That means it's possible to have a DVI cable that only carries analog signals, a DVI socket on a monitor that only accepts analog inputs, or a graphics card DVI port that only puts out an analog signal.

The last two are extremely unlikely, but it is vaguely possible that you have an analog-only cable - or maybe even a faulty cable. Do you have another one you can try?
