Problems with dual WAN on a new DrayTek 2830 router

However since they installed it, the second WAN is so slow it's unusable.

I have spent the last couple of weeks on the Phone with BT and the broadband line company who have ran countless tests and 'hard resets' and they both claim there is nothing wrong with the line, yet the IT company insist it's the line at fault.

We didn't have this problem prior to them installing this new DrayTek, and BT plus the line company are now stating it is the router at fault.

I'm stuck in the middle and all I care about is getting this working properly!

So what could be causing this problem?

Why when our dedicated VPN LAN 2 LAN tunnel is set up on the second WAN is it so diabolically slow that it is unusable?

Is there some setting somewhere that might be wrong?

Is this DrayTek router actualy any good?

Are there any known firmware issues?

Any help diagnosing the problem and resolving this is much appreciated.

probably worth a look at the firmware and the modem code...

As the WAN 2 interface on the draytek is straight ethernet, do you get a fast response if you plug your laptop straight into the 2nd circuit's modem?

I know the first thing the IT company who installed it did was to update the firmware to the latest one, well I assume it was the latest one, but that doesn't always mean it's the best one!

WAN2 is working fine as we still use static ip and the EasyNet ISPs ADSL2 gateway router via ethernat as you say.

It's WAN1 using PPPOA and plugged direct into the filter with BT broadband that is causing the problems.

I assume there is no modem code as we are using PPPOA direct?

As I understand (and it is 2 years since I did any stuff with a draytek)...

The firmware is in 2 parts - the router code and application and the modem firmware. you may get soem benefit from tweaking the modem firmware which will affect the PPPOA connection.

It depends on the type of ADSL service that you have... if it is ADSL2+
For ADSL2+ Annex M lines, the latest modem code 2471201 is suggested

I don't know if these will work and improve things, but it is worth a try - look at support.draytek.co.uk and there is a lot of other firmware & modem variations at ftp.draytek.com

well it is ADSL2, but it also says

They don't make it very clear do they they!

Whate sync rate are you getting from the ADSL line at the moment?

Dunno, where do I find that? Here is copy of current (online status - physical connection), if that helps

Some of the modem firwares alter line side parameters - so while 232201 is correct, other firmwares may be more correct!

They don't make it very clear do they they!

where do I find that?

There should be a status page (where the connection status is something like "showtime") I cn't remember where, but it isnt too deep in the menus!

Ok...

I need to recap!

2 ADSL circuits
1 Vigor 2830 --> Router A
1 "other" router --> Router B

Router B connects to circuit B
Router A connects to circuit A (WAN1)
Router A connects to Router B (WAN2)

As I understand this; circuit B performs ok and circuit A does not.
Is this correct?

From the figures above - you are getting about 1Mbps upload and 12+mbps download. The 1Mbps upload is a bottleneck will cause apparent slowness from a VPN point of view.

What results do you get from a speedtest site? Do they match the above?

What happens if you physically disconnect Router B from Router A? - do you get any apparent improvement in connectivity?

Run a speed test on both circuits using the exact setup you have (nothing else plugged in) and then use router B only (attcahed to you test PC only) to test each circuit individually to the same speed test site. In effect, this will tell you *if* the router is not performing as expected or *if* soemthing else is wrong

1mb upload a bottle neck? that's the fastest you can get from a standard BT broadband, even the easynet line is only 1mb up.

They are both 1mb-up/20mb-down lines so if the 1mb up was a bottle neck it would bottle neck with either line and it doesn't?

I seemed to have 'fixed' the problem by turning off QoS.

I don't know what the values should be for either line but the IT company had them set at 'out' and 25% across the board.

But when searching the web about this problem i found many threads saying QoS was a problem, i turned it off and now the lines are running beautifuly.

I'm geting ping responses in the low 30s and not a single dropped packet (touch wood).

So was this the problem or coincidence?

I can't keep pulling the lines down to test, our company runs on IT and our members and staff have already been getting rather peed off with the amount of downtime we have had at late, and as the saying goes, "if it aint broke!", which for the moment, it isn't!

I even checked with our remote user in South Africa and she said it's like we have just put in a new system, she can't belive how fast it is now running!

I just tested again pinging from both servers either end of the VPN tunnel and the reponse was the same for both; all 4 packets received all @ 31/32/31/32.

It's working really well now?

So was it QoS causing the bottle necks and dropped packets?
