Problems with Datasheet view of Lists

I have seen several questions on the sharepoint site regarding an inability to view a list in datasheet view.

Since I have several computers I have been able through a process of elimination to identify the problem.

On the computers where I am able to open up the datasheet view correctly I noticed that IE has an add on called
Microsoft Office List 11.0. On those computers where it is not installed the list can not open up and an error message is geneated. This add on is an ActiveX control called stslist.dll.

The only problem is that I have not found a way to add this add on to IE on those computers without it. Typically IE will prompt you when an add on is missing an allow you to download it and install it. Unfortunately when you try to open a list in datasheet view it just gives you an error.

I imagine that there must be a workaround this, the information that IE registers in the Add ons is probably in the registry or some other place that can be manipulated directly, if anyone can shed any light on this it would help a lot of people, I have seen this problem posted up several times without any satisfactory outcome.

I found out that the problem was that I had MS Office XP installed in some of the computers and that this is why it wouldn't open the list in datasheet view. You need to have Office 2003 and run SP2. After that IE will properly prompt you to run the ActiveX control needed to open up the datasheet view.
