Just downloaded Red Hat 7.2 yesterday , installing some DNS Servers, got 'em all installed, configured for high security, went through the DNS HOW-TO, configured DNS for a simple caching server, logged in under root and tried to start the service named, /var/log/messages reports
"couldn't open pid file '/var/run/named/named.pid': permission denied.

Looked around, didn't find much info on troubleshooting,
any help is appreciated.

rights to the /var/run/named/ directory are..
drwxr-xr-x

this is a fairly default installation of only the DNS server.

hi,

give chmod 777 on /named/ directory a try..

good luck

Does the named.pid file exist? We had some similar occurance, cannot remember exactly we did to solve it, but I remember the pid file either didn't exist, or we simply deleted it as it had the wrong permissions.

Hi,

I'm fairly sure that the redhat bind rpms (including sysv init scripts) assume the use of rndc. This is a reasonably new addition to bind in the form of a control utility that operates on port 953 and, hopefully, provides for secure administration of the server. You need to setup crytopgraphic keys and amend your /etc/named.conf and /etc/rndc.conf accordingly. See -->
Hope this helps
