Problems with Autoshrink in SQL 2000?

We have been successfully using autoshrink for years in our application on SQL 7.0. We recently moved to SQL 2000 and our databases no longer seems to shrink despite autoshrink being on. Many of them show as much as 50% free space with sp_spaceused. If I manually shrink them, we claim back more then 50%. We have autoshrink on and prefer to stay with that since our application is 24x7 and running shrinkdatabase seems to be a harder on the system then smaller periodic shrinks. Has anyone seen any issues with autoshrink on SQL 2000?
Thanks!

Is it your data or log file that is retaining all this space? If you go in Enterprise Manager, databases > all tasks > shrink database, then files. Is it the data file or the log that has the free space?

It is the data(mdf) file. Some of ours are over 20G now when under SQL7 they rarely moved past 10G.

Thanks!
