problems when installing a new hp laserjet printer

I have acquired a HP laserjet 4 printer.
My previously installed printer isa lexmark, which works ok.

The install of the new printer appears to work ok, until I try and print a test page, when I get the message
'there was an error writing to lpt1, cannot access the port,it may be in use by another program'

I have shut down all programs, so that very little is running, but still I cannot talk to the new HP printer.
I have windows 98 installed.

Can anybody help?

its the lexmark driver some of it is still there when they take over an lpt they take it over uninsatll the port and ty reinstalling it some thimes that works. So long and thanks for all the fish.

Look at your WIN.INI file and search for any LEX occurances - it may tell you something.
