I'm new to the Merlin-Legend so bear with me. It's an R6.0 w/ M2000 voice mail/AA , MLX20L console and two carriers. Had a report of a dead phone, sta 513 port 16. Tested and found both phone & port bad! I got another MLX5D replacement set and found port 64 not in use. So I followed what the mgr manual said to do to swap two phones between the ports, both modules being MLX types. Plugged in the replacemnt MLX5D and it worked! Except for the voice mail, after so many rings I was told it should go to VM. It doesn't, just rings! Tried to follow the user guide but I get a fast bsy when I put in the VM cover number, 770. Now I have another problem w/ it. A call rings into 513 and the ring is a very loud screech noise-continuous- no pause. They tried to answer it with call pkup and it stopped. There was an outside call on the phone that pkup'd the call and 513 was now dead - NO DT or lites! This has happened serveral times now. I thought I had a wire cross so I changed house pairs & the jumper cord to the port. But that has not helped. One thing I have noticed is if the phone is unplugged for a while and then plugged back in it starts working again. I have not had it fail while on prem. I tried to read the alarms from the console but nothing for that module showed up. I now suspect the replacement phone could be defective?
Any suggestions or courses of action would be most helpful.

Thanks in advance!.......JIM......

You will need to program your phone into the cover group for VM (typically group #30). As far as the phone goes, there are several steps you might try. First, print out the Ext Info for your set and verify all is as it should be, next try swapping it with a known working phone and see if the trouble 'follows' the phone or stays with the port. It's possible that your new port is also bad. If this is the case, do yourself a favor and 'Label' the ports as 'BAD PRT' so you and others will recognize them in the future.

Hi franke,

Thanks for your suggestions. I"ll try downloading the files to print with SPM since the switch doesn't have a printer. I need to get a better understanding of the "LUCENT logic" with respect to call coverage and how it works. I had previously tried to display the group 770 on the console for the VM, but all it showed were the stations connected to the VM ports. The VM/AA is a Messaging 2000 PC platform. All the other groups appeared to be vacant. We will see prints out.

In the process of trouble shooting the ports, I have not been able to find any descriptions of the pin outs for the port jacks on the modules in the practices. Should I be able to measure any voltages on these pins? I know on the analog I would get loop battery, but on digitals and hybrids you don't know what to expect. Especially for a switch I am still learning and trying to keep in service.
