Problems using sendmail virtual hosting

I've gone as far as creating the virtusertable file as explained at sendmail.org but I get confused when they tell me to &quot;makemap dbm /etc/mail/virtusertable < sourcefile&quot;
What does this do? I type that in exactly and it tells me:
&quot;makemap: Need to recompile with -DNDBM for dbm support&quot;
I am running FreeBSD 4.2-RELEASE, and the sendmail that comes with it. Could someone please help? Thanx
