I have a sco server running 5.0.4, is has the following patches installed:

rs5.0.4c
oss601a

Recently (about a month ago) when users passwords have expired or when we use the passwd -f command the following happens:

login: pjollife
Password:
Last successful login for pjollife: 09:45:45 AM Wed 29 May 2002 BST on ttyp4
Last unsuccessful login for pjollife: 09:04:59 AM Wed 29 May 2002 BST on ttyp3
Your password has expired
Setting password for user: pjollife
Sorry.

Password request denied.
Reason: Invalid old password.
Login aborted due to no new password

We have a test server, same patch levels etc which does not have the problem. I have run fixmog to see if any files have changed to see if there is an issue and all appears ok.

Any suggestions anyone has will be great as it is driving me nuts.

Cheers in advance

- Paul

I have this occasionally, though I don't know how to rectify I use the alternative of going into scaodmin and forcing the password change from there...

I have tried the scoadmin route, exactly the same problem. I have checked the permissions on /tcb/files/auth and also run authck which reports a few minor errors, but nothing to do with password.

Thank for the repsonse.

Can you show me a copy of:

/etc/auth/system/default

/etc/auth/system/default...

default: :d_name=default: :u_pwd=*: :u_priority#0:u_cmdpriv=audittrail,su,queryspace,printqueue,mem,terminal
: :u_syspriv=execsuid,nopromain,chmodsugid,chown: :u_minchg#604800:u_maxlen#8:u_exp#2419200:u_life#0: :u_pickpw:u_genpwd:u_restrict@:u_nullpw@: :u_suclog#0:u_unsuclog#0:u_maxtries#5:u_lock: :u_singleuserpswd:u_secclass=c2:u_integrity@:u_tcbpw@:\
:u_pwseg#1:\
:t_logdelay#1:t_maxtries#99:t_login_timeout#60: :chkent:

I have run the authck command and reports loads of errors, but does not appear to fix them as when I run authck again it reports the same errors.

Further update, I think it has to be a permissions problem somewhere as if I convert a user to a pseudo root user then the "passwd -f" command works fine.

Still going nuts...

Looks ok, perhaps try a fixmog -i.
Try an alpha numeric password..

Sorry im guessing now. Perhaps someone else has some ideas! Ive ran out of steam!

permissions on /etc/passwd ? users probably dont have permission to read or modify it, changing them to pseudo root would allow them to. ***************************************
Party on, dudes!
