Hi all,

To begin I wish you all a very happy new year.
My problem deals with BS5510 upgrade.
I've one switch that I cannot upgrade, it always returns an "Error accessing file" message. That's surprising because :
- Some other switches of the same model were upgraded without any problem, with the same laptop, cables, software versions.
- IP connectivity is ok between the baystack and the TFTP server.
- I tried several TFTP servers, nearly all ports of the switch, several network cables, several .img / .bin files.
- I tried with auto-negociation AND with forcing 100M full on the switch & the laptop.

When I run the diag on this switch, I get :
'e' (display errors) :
Error Log : Bad Port Mask = 0000000=LS; MS=0000000
Loop Test Error Description : (none)

'p' (Post Tests) :
all PASSED

's' (Stack external loopback test) :
Test 402 x Passes x Errs Stack External Loopback
XGS Fabric Stack external loopback ERROR
[x being a counter which increases each time the test keeps on looping]

'i' (Initialize config/log config control in both Flash) :
Didn't change anything.

I also resetted the switch to default settings, it didn't work better.

I think this could be a hardware problem ; do you have any other opinion ? Another switch of the same model has a similar problem, but only for the image file, I could upgrade only the diag one.

I add that these tests were performed before the end of the year ; I wasn't drunk while doing them !!!

Thanks in advance.

What version of software are you currently running?

You can not for example jump from 4.2.x to 5.1. You need to upgrade first to 5.0.x and then to 5.1.

Mike

I'm currently running the following versions :
FW : 5.0.0.3 / SW : 5.0.4.010

and am trying to upgrade to :
FW : 5.0.0.4 / SW : 5.1.0.014

There shoudn't be many versions between theses respective ones ?

I don't believe there would be an issue going between those two versions.

I would suspect you check your TFTP server or network connection. I'm assuming that you can ping the switch from the TFTP server?

I have about 50 ERS 5500 switches and the only time I've seen this is when there has been an issue with the TFTP server or connection to the switch.

If you're doing the upgrade from a laptop you might try TFTPD32 at Again I assume that your just connecting the laptop with a static IP address to one of the ports and your giving the switch an IP address in the same subnet (using the Default VLAN).

Very odd.

Mike

Is this switch part of a stack? If so, have you tried unstacking them?

Hi again,

Thanks for your answers and suggestions. All the switches I had to upgrade for this time were standalone ones, no stack. I've configured a static IP on each switch AND on my laptop, all the addresses being of course in the same subnet. The switches are not yet in use, so they are not connected to the network at this time, the only connection they can have now is the one with my laptop.

And yes, I've checked that ping is ok in both ways between switch and laptop before to begin the download.

I've tried with TFTPD32, Solarwinds TFTP Server and another freeware I can't remind the name, the result was the same.

I've also changed several times the network cable between the laptop and the switch, and this afternoon I've done another test with another computer, as I was wondering whether my network adapter would have a problem. The result still remains the same.

Regards,

Yaoul

If you have SW 5.0.5.26 you might want to try upgrading to that version and see if you get the same error. I believe you can download the software from the Nortel website if you have a maintenance contract.

Mike

Ok I'll try it tomorrow and keep you informed.
Thanks for your help.

Yaoul

Sorry I forgot the feedback.
I found no operation to solve the problem. The switches are on the way back to the vendor at whom I opened a case.
Thanks for your help.
