Dear Everybody,

I have recently installed Red Hat Linux 7.0 onto my PC in a dual boot configuration alongside Windows XP. I first intalled Windows XP and all is well with that. I then installed Red Hat 7.0 being mindful to load LILO into the first root directory (not the master boot directory - because this is disastorous when dual booting with any Windows NT systems). As a result of the above instal I have been forced to use a boot disk in order to boot into Linux.
When booting up via the boot disk my Linux instillation goes through the usual setups with the usual "green" OKs being displayed. However immediately after this point in the loading up I get the following error notices:

local host login: According to var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running (668) but seems to have been murdered mysteriously.

local host login: According to var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running (686) but seems to have been murdered mysteriously.

local host login: According to var/run/gdm.pid, gdm was already running (......

This message continues to repeat with the number in brackets () increasing every time. Every time that the display shows a new error message the screen flashes about three times. Eventually the systems stops altogether and displays a message similar to this:

"X" Windowing system has stopped responding. Will try again in 5 minutes.

If anybody has any suggestions concerning what these messages are and/or how to fix them they will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Regards

David

You shouldn't have a problem installing LILO or GRUB in the MBR when dual booting with Windows XP. I did it the other day and I can boot into Red Hat or Windows XP from GRUB without any problems.

It sounds like your booting into directly into the GUI, or runlevel 5. Edit the /etc/inittab file and change this line...

id:5:initdefault:

...to say this...

id:3:initdefault:

This will boot to a command line. Login in and run "startx" to start the GUI. The problem will be easier to fix if your booting to the command line. Try running Xconfigurator and/or xf68config to fix the GUI.
