Hi all

I'd really appreciate your help with this so here goes...I'm a newbie to illustrator and downloaded the trial version of CS3 the other night. I was getting along quite nicely with it until I came to save my images as EPS or PDF files- the files are just blank and the images aren't saved? What am I'm doing wrong here or is this just something to do with it being the trial version? Also, my fly out menus don't work either and I keep having to look at the shortcuts menus everytime I want to use a variation of a tool- is this because it's the trial version too?

Many thanks
Nickie

...as far as i'm aware the trial is fully functional for 30 days...

...if saving to pdf ensure your artwork in within the document boundary...

...if you are having trouble with flyout menus, then you can try resetting the preference file:

...for windows:

C:>Documents and Settings > User >Application Data > Adobe > Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings

...inside this folder is a file called AIPrefs. If manually deleting this file, ensure Illustrator is closed first.

...or...

...on mac:
apple/command + alt/option + shift, held down on launching illustrator will reset the prefs...

...on windows:
command + alt/option + shift, held down on launching illustrator will reset the prefs...

Hi Andrew

Thanks so much for your help, I really appreciate it. I've managed to locate the hidden folder although I'm not still not too sure what exactly I would be deleting should I choose to delete it? I assume they're default settings and if I delete them this should fix the problems I'm having with the flyout menus?

Many thanks

hi nickie,

the preferences file is recreated on launch of illustrator if illustrator knows that one doesn't exist. I'm not saying that this will guarantee a fix, but usually if illustrator is displaying odd behaviour then deleting the preferences file usually does the trick. Just make sure it is the file named 'adobe illustrator prefs'. I'm on Mac OS X so i imagine it has similar named.

You can also simply remove the entire folder to be reconstructed named 'Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings', you don't in truth, have to delete it, as it can be moved out to your desktop if you wish and move files back if required.

To show hidden files, hidden folders, and all filename extensions in Windows Explorer:

In Windows Explorer, choose Tools > Folder Options.
Click the View tab in the Folder Options dialog box.
In Advanced Settings, select Show Hidden Files And Folders.
Deselect Hide File Extensions For Known File Types.
Click OK.

...as stated in previous post ensure the path is as follows for XP:

1. Quit Illustrator.
2. %systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\~username\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator[Version][Settings-(CS/CS2)].

...for vista:

1. Quit Illustrator.
2. Rename the AIPrefs file (for example, to AIPrefs.old) in the Users/(user)/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Illustrator CS3 Settings folder.
3. Start Illustrator. Illustrator creates a new preferences file.

...if you still have trouble afterwards, then there is something else causing the problem which could be a number of areas...

...are you a vista user?
