Problems Resolving Hostnames on Openserver 5.0.4

We are currently experiencing an issue on our Openserver 5.0.4 boxes with the OS taking a long time to resolve hostnames. Essentially what we are seeing is that if your attempt to connect, ping, traceroute to a hostname, it takes several minutes before anything happens. However, if you connect, ping, traceroute to the IP address the connection is immediate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would say the problem is with your DNS server rather than your OpenServer box? It should be defined in /etc/resolv.conf.

Thanks for the quick response Anihilannic. We think we have found the issue. It appears at though our 5.0.4 boxes were attempting to resolve hostnames through the resolv.conf instead of the /etc/hosts file. The strange part about it is that the issue comes and goes with no real pattern to it.

In that case, if you don't wish your OpenServer boxes to attempt DNS lookups at all you should update the "hosts:" line in /etc/nsswitch.conf to only refer to "files".

Unfortunately I no longer have a SCO box to play with to give you exact instructions.

you need to have the /etc/resolv.conf file.
if you don't want it to resolve from a nameserver then remove the nameserver line(s) in the file and add a line like

hostresorder local / bind
