I’m working on two PC’s, both with EXCeL97. One PC will open all XL files from Explorer by ‘double-clicking’, even those with long filenames; the other tries to read long filenames as separate files (ie. It tries to open “bid cost.xls” as “bid.xls” and “cost.xls”). Can U tell me where to find an option like ‘enable long filenames”?

Go to the computer it is failing on and open explorer. Click on either tools|folder options (W2k) or View|Folder Options (W9x). click on the file types tab and scroll the box until you see Excel Worksheet (XLS). select this line and choose edit or advanced. now click on the bold word Open and click edit... make sure all the text box values now on this screen are identical in every way to the same screen on the PC thats working.

I have checked as you suggest - they are identical - they both run on Win NT and have a switch '/e' after the 'application used to perform action' which I don't know the meaning of
Thanks - any other suggestions

The first thing to check is under Tools-Option-General and make sure "ignore other applications" is NOT checked.

Then, if you're a registry person, you can export and then delete the XLS extension folder in the registry. Then launch Excel so that it re-registers the extension.

Does the open entry use DDE?

Have you tried shift right click on an excel file and use open with?

Just as an FYI:

Under View-Folder options-File types, my "open" for Excel has Use DDE checked and this is in the line below it:

[open("%1")]

My command line (above that) says:

"c:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\EXCEL.EXE" /e

I have Excel 2000

Dreamboat hit it on the head...i had to do that same thing on excel files...

Checked that the ignore other apps is not checked
deleted the .xls extension entry in the registry
removed .xls file types from the 'folder-view-option-filetypes' (having done this, said 'yes' to the warning and then closed down the dialog box, immediately on returning to the 'foldr-view-options-filetypes' the .xls is back - assigned to EXCEL).
I work on NT and suspect I dont have the necessary permissions to delete file types
Will have to check with our administrators - see U next christmas!!

I use NT 4 and Excel 97 - so you could check the registry settings for file assocations against those below if you to ensure your registry is correct.

Start\Run: Regedit

Open HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.

scroll down to .xls an open it
open Excel.Sheet.8
click on ShellNew
In the right hand panel it should read: FileName "excel8.doc"

Then scroll right down the list and look up Excel.Sheet.8 (at the same depth/level under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT as .doc was) and open it
click on the folder called: Shell - and open it
click on the folder called: Open - and open it
click on the folder called: command
In the right hand panel it should read: Default "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\excel.exe" /e

Then click on the folder called: ddeexec
In the right hand panel it should read: Default "[open("%1")]"

Then click on the folder called: application
In the right hand panel it should read: Default "Excel"

The click on the folder called: topic
In the righ hand panel it should read: Default "system"

I've fixed a number of file association problems using variations on the above for different programs.

Mission Accomplished - (still not heard from my own helpdesk yet!) Fagan's suggestion proved to be the answer - After fiddling about a bit, it seems that if i added the 'shellnew' sub folder (which was previously missing) in the registry CLASSES_ROOT it reacted properly
Thanks to All
