Hi all,

One of our users laptops hard disk collapsed last week. A new one was supplied by Dell under warranty. The other IT tech rebuilt the laptop using the restore CD and loaded all the software etc using our "software install" account, not admin but with full domain admin rights.

He can log in using any local profile (no surprise) but whenever he tries to login using a domain account it takes an age to login.

I'm logging into the laptop using one of our basic user test account. I started logging on at about 11:40 this morning. It's now 13:00 and it's not fully logged in. I'm at the Personalised Settings - Windows Desktop Update and it been doing it for the last 25 minutes.

Before I start applying fixed IP address (user takes his laptop off site and connects back using netgear VPN software) can anyone think of any problems that might be causing this?

Laptop : Dell 620
OS : XP Pro all updates
Connected to a Win2K domain

Thanks

Robert

Did you use the same computer account or create a new one?
Did you add the user/Computer using System Properties - Computer Name NetworkID - Network Identification Wizard?

If the laptop is part of a domain remove it.

Delete the computer account from the domain, wait a while if you have several DC's,sites in order for the "delete" to be replicated around.

Also delete any entries of the laptop from DHCP, WINS and DNS.

Then try joining the laptop to the domain and see if a domain user can log on, try logging on to a OU with no group policies.

Also, check your hardware manager for any devices that may not have had their drivers reinstalled, or that may be having trouble.

Good luck,

Thanks all,

The laptop was given the same name it had before.

The IT tech ran the network set-up wizard to join the network.

I've deleted the computer account and the references form DNS, DHCP and WINS.

When I try and join the laptop to the domain I get the following error message. "The computer failed to join the domain "cea". Please contact you domain administrator and indicate that the computer failed to update the dnsHostName and/or servicePrincipal (SPN) attribute in its Active Directory computer account. Once the problem is resolved you may join the computer to the "cea" domain"

Is it just a case of adding the computer account to AD or is there something more serious lurking in the background?.

Thanks

Robert

Thanks for the info.

After all that the motherboard on the laptop expired this afternoon. Now waiting on Dell to fix that one.
