Problems installing **OEM** version of Win98 alongside WinME and Win2K

I already have WinME installed on my C: drive and Win2k on my D drive. NT Loader runs at startup, loading ME by default. I have an OEM CD version of Win98 that I wish to install to my F drive. All my drives are partitions of the same disk. The problem is that this OEM CD will not allow me to install Win98. I get onto the screen where the mouse pointer is present and on the left side a predicted time is given for the time taken to install, but after Win98 setup has examined my current config, it reports that an existing version of Windows has been found that it is unable to upgrade. I am advised to purchase the upgrade CD.

Does anyone have any constructive suggestions as to how I could get around this and install Win98 on the F partition. I am not trying to write over ME at all - the F drive is empty. Also, I have no desire to format any of my drives.

Thanks in advance to any who are able to assist.

this has been a typical problem, the answer lies probally in the FAQ of this forum, but it has always been advised(most of the time anyways) to always install Win98/ME prior to an NT based OS (Win2k) because once Win2k is installed, its not easy for the average user to install an OS like 98 afterwards and along side.

I think you're going to need a boot manager utility. You get one for "free" if you buy Partition Magic 6. Once you have PM make sure that all the partitions are primary and not extended. If they aren't I think it will let you convert them. Then enable BootMagic and make sure you have all the partitions targeted correctly. When rebooting, put your 98 boot disk in before the BootMagic screen appears and install 98. If all the partitions are truly separate, then 98 install will have no way of knowing what else is there. The only problem may be limited sizes of the partitions since some OS's have problems with it being after cylinder 1024. (I really haven't figured that one out yet.) I think you should have Win2k first on the drive since it is more picky. I recently had a similar set up on my computer and PM 6.0 really makes it easy on you. Good luck.

Except that you will find that 98 will overwrite the boot in some way that you will have to go back to BootMagic with the emergency boot disk that BM has you make to re-enable the Boot-Magic.
Don't remember the exact details but it was a minor PITA. And the only solution was the emergency boot disk.
And you enable each partition you want to install on to be the active one before you boot up for install.
