Hi.I will soon recive a formal trainign on Netware LANs, but in the mean time i´m trying to install a Netware 5.1 server on a Pentium IV of 1.7 MHZ, with a 512 RAM pc800, a 40 Giga Hard Disk, and a D850MD integrated motherboard(lan-sound). When i follow the QuickStart Netware 5.1 manual, it specifies that i must create a Partition with a DOS 7 included on the Netware 5.1 License/Cryptography Diskette. The first problem that i have is that the FDISK version will only recognize 8.4 Gigas of Hard Disk. Question? How can i recover my 32 Gigabytes lost. On the other hand , i cant make the Netware server recognize the integrated Intel 82562ET Fast Ethernet PCI LAN. Which driver should i use??? How do i load on the netware 5.1 the LAN drivers that come with the D850MD motherboard, since they dont come in a .LAN extension. I will appreciate any help. Regards

Hi Gustavo
First, the DOS partition is only to boot from; for a large drive such as yours, I'd create a 2GB partition. Later in the installation procedure you will create your NetWare partitions. For that, I'd recommend a 4-6GB SYS: volume and large NSS DATA: volume.
Second, I couldn't find a YES bulletin for that NIC, meaning that it isn't officially supported for NetWare 5.1. I recommend that you purchase another network adapter that is YES tested and approved. Here is the link to check whether or not a piece of hardware is YES tested:

Hope that helps

Hi:
I´m attaching my first help request, please read it previouslly to understand my problem.

Second request:
Ok. I was finnally able to begin the installation process of the Netware 5.1. I´ve followed all the procedures indicated in the Novell Instalation Guide, but after i specify the SYS Volumen and Netware partition sizes, and the system begins the Graphical Display Mode, the PC hangs up. It just stays there with a gray screen that says Netware all over. I´ve tryed reinstalling but the same screen appearse over and over. Could somebody tell me the possible cause. Thanks in advance.

You are getting the Graphical screen - there are other things behind it - do an Alt-Tab or Alt-Esc and you'll be able to toggle around to the other screens that are hiding - this is a wierdness in the 5.1 install that puzzled me a couple of years ago. One other piece of advice, you really should be installing Netware on a CPU designed to be a server, better yet a Novell YES certified server. All that processor speed is wasted on Novell - it is so efficient it doesn't need the speed, unless perhaps to cope with the IDE drive - I'm a firm believer in SCSI drives for a server, with RAID 1 or RAID 5 for safety in case something should crump. Also, do NOT activate compression on any drive. Suballocation is fine, but compression will cause you grief some day in the future.

We have run into this problem many times... Novell is aware of it and has a work-around...

Go to the Novell website and download the following files... PREDS8A.EXE and INSTP5X.EXE. From these two patches, copy DIBMIG.NLM, NI.ZIP (Do not expand the NI.ZIP file, leave it as is!) and INSTPROX.NLM to the C Drive. Place them into a Directory called C:\NWUPDATE. Create the Directory if it doesn't already exist. Once these files are copied to the C:\NWUPDATE Directory, start your installation again.

Also, because of the size of these files, you may have to burn them to CD, It beats trying to Zip and Unzip them.

Good Luck!
