When my Teac CD Rewritable drive started acting up, I purchased a Samsung drive to replace it. My computer has a Pentium III, 700 MHz processor and is running Windows 2000. According to the Microsoft site, the Samsung drive I bought is compatible with Windows 2000.
Although the old CD drive worked fine (until it started going bad), I can’t get the new one to work.
What happens is that the CD Drive posts during boot up. The device is listed in the Device Manager but with a yellow exclamation mark, and the device does not show up in Windows Explorer.
The message we get is, “This device is not working because Windows could not install the driver. Code 31.” Code 31 means that the driver could not be loaded because the CD depends on another device that is not functioning correctly. (But in the Device Manager, there are no errors indicated for other devices.)
Samsung live update, which updates CD device firmware, cannot see the CD.
Anyone have any ideas what device the CD might be dependent on, or how I find out what that device is.
(We have a call into Samsung, but good luck. Their message basically is, Don't call us; we'll call you.)
Thanks for any pointers,
Bill B.
