Problems in linking from Outlook to Access

I was trying to link my address book to an Access Database (office 2000) In Access I went to the file menu and chose "Get External Data", "Link tables" and in the Link dialogue box where you pick the type of file you want to link, I choose Outlook. It then starts a Link Exchange/Outlook wizard to allow me to pick the MAPI address book or file that I would like to link access table to. I choose Address books and I get a message that says "Address books currently unavailable, wizard cannot access".

I tried to close everything and start over, I even reinstalled Office 2000 thinking I had some missing wizards or something. Has anyone had this issue, or does anyone know what the problem may be?

I would like to automatically pull in data or link my address book information, and even better yet, specific business contacts in to Access. Please give me any ideas you have.

Thanks Dawn

Dawn: You won't be able to access the database when you're in Outlook. I would try a fresh restart, then try importing from Outlook, making sure you did not open Outlook first.

Hate to tell you, but this does not sound like it will be very efficient for you. If you can let us know "the bottom line" here--exactly what you want to do with that DB if you got it working, perhaps we can help more.

Thank you Dreamboat...Here is the bottom line. I have a job tracking database where I have to enter in client information that I already have entered in Outlook Contacts. Trying to be efficient :), I thought I could simply link to Outlook and save myself the double-entry. I looked it up in the help menu and it seemed easy enough to do. When I went link via Access it allowed me to pick Outlook but then would not allow me to select the address book (as explained above). I may have misworded, but I am trying to bring data into Access FROM Outlook, not the other way around. Dawn

If it's a one-time, Dawn, just export the contacts folder (file-export) to Excel and pull it into Access. You should then be able to save it as an Excel file and import it into Outlook again when you're done. As for a permanent link? Yuk--probably really inefficient, especially if you're in both a lot.

And, well, the help file talks about linking to contacts, not address book. I tried here at home and got the same thing. I was unable to choose the address book even tho it's right there in the list.

Perhaps this has something to do with it?

Yeah, I was hoping to do a permanent link. Darn! I had no problem going into Outlook and doing a export to Access, but it brought in all the fields. I guess I can fool around with that a bit. Thanks for your insight. Dawn
