I am using Access 2000 and have created a link to an Informix database. When I select the linked table and open the design window, a number of the text fields have both the Required and Allow Zero Length set to Yes. In datsheet view, these fields on existing rows are space filled yet I cannot create new rows with spaces in. When I enter spaces to these fields I get the following error: 'You tried to assign the null value to a variable that is not a variant data type'.

Have you tried setting the default value to a zero length string?

Sorry I should have said originally, I am stuck with the Informix database as it is, the default value not being set.
Also, I have to create the new rows to be similar to the existing i.e. where there is no actual text to input the fields have to be space filled to fit in with the main (non MS Access) systems using the database.
