Problems converting text

Lately, when I've been updating legacy text (I think that's when this happens), Illustrator will put a "?" in place of a space. When I delete that space and put another in, it does the same thing. Currently, the problem font is Bembo, which hasn't been a problem before. Has anyone experienced this or know what the problem is?

Which version of Illustrator are you using?

When I used v10 I couldn't use special characters after a certain amount of time unless I restarted the program. Since I didn't write that much in Illustrator anyway I didn't look for a workaround and I haven't experienced that again in CS2.
