Problems connecting Media Converter to a 3COM switch

I have a 100ST Media converter that I'm connecting to a 3COM 3c17304 Gbic fiber module in port 27. Everything links but DHCP won't work and if I set up my laptop as a static it won't work either. No filtering or mac/ip specific programming is done on the switch according to the customer's IT guy. Fiber Gbic set to auto-negotiating but still no luck. DHCP works fine if I plug my laptop into one of the copper ports.

Any suggestions? Was thinking about getting another MC and using a standard port to start the circuit convert to fiber to the other building since they don't want to put out the money for another switch at the other building and then connect the 2nd media converter.

Probably something simple I'm overlooking.

With very few exceptions, fiber never auto negotiates.

Auto negotiation happens at an electrical level below TCP/IP and fiber does not use electricity.

GBICs go gigabit.

100 does 100

10 does 10

etc.

I tried to remain child-like, all I achieved was childish.

This is common. Your copper ports are 100/1000 so you forget that the GBIC slots take modules which are one or the other, not both.

Media converters can be 100/1000 on the copper port, but the fibre port is one speed or the other.

Thanks I knew it was something simple(stupid) I was overlooking. Funny thing is, I asked the IT guy if it was 10 or 100 and he told me it was auto and the light bulb never went off. Must be a faulty circuit. Lol

The media converters often have "auto" written them. It only refers to the copper port. Easy mistake. Done it 100 times myself. Well, a couple of times maybe....
