Hello. I am trying to connect a Nortel StarTalk flash 2 port voicemail unit to a Nortel DR5 6X16 phone system. I am having some trouble making it work. I have it wired to pair 25. I can't get any of the feature codes to login to the voicemail such as feature 983, 982, 981, etc. Whenever I type those codes in, it comes back with an "inactive feature" message. I made sure the extension port works, which it does. I have also tried disconnecting power and applying power to both the startalk flash and the 6X16, as well as also trying to use **XFTEST to delete/reset the voicemail feature codes - but it won't work either. Any help, steps, or advice would be much appreciated!!! Thanks a lot!

You need to check a wiring diagram, such as those in the FAQ section. I think you have your Flash attached to the music on hold pair if you actually used pair 25. Did you mean pair 1 ? You need to use a station pair (or 2 if you have a Flash 4). If it is a flash 2, did you use the top jack to connect to the 616 or the bottom jack on the Flash (4p4c jacks). On the 616, I would use pair 15 for the voicemail or 15 and 16 for a Flash 4. How do you know that the extension port works on the 616, and what is the color code of the wiring pair you tested ? What version software is the Flash ? If you have it on an actual station port, did you try a feature 903 after allowing 10 or so minutes for the boot up ?

I meant to say extension 25 and not pair 25, but when I moved it to extension 15, it still did not work. I keep getting that inactive feature message. The reason I can tell that the extensions are working is because I plugged in a Nortel phone into it. The version of the software flash is VER 1.7.0 . It is the 2 port kind. Any more help and suggestions would be fantastic! Thank you!

Are you using the same 4p4c cable to test the port to a phone as you are connecting to the Flash ? (Just making sure there are no cabling issues). You are attaching to the Flash's top 4p4c port, correct ?

What shows on the the phone display when you have the Flash connected and do Feature 903 ? (Rev 1.7 should not need 903, but it cannot hurt to check)

Do you have a laptop with a serial port ? If so, you can connect to the db25 port on the the Flash and use Hyperterm or equiv virtual terminal to observe the Flash boot process.

With the power supply on the Flash attached, what status is shown by the red lamp on the Flash 2 ?

When the Flash is powered down, be sure the PCMIA card is firmly seated.

When I do future 903 it says " inactive future" ( just as all of the other voicemail feature codes do). The pcmia card is firm and the red lamp is on steady. And I'm using the top 4p4c jack. I should be getting a db25 serial cable tomorrow for my computer for the flash boot process. Anymore tips or help is welcomed! Thanks!

Watch it boot on the Hyperterm window, settings for Flash are 1200 baud, 8 data, 1 stop, no parity, term type VT-100

Given what you have done, I am suspecting that the Flash software card is bad at this point. However, you can watch the boot on the Hyperterm window and see where it bombs. You can do a cut-and-paste from that text window and post here for an analysis.

I have seen first boots take 10 to 15 minutes to finish, but you should see the first handshakes within a minute or two of power up.

Here is a sample of the kind of text that should scroll up during a boot:

Connection issue. Bad mod cord? Try plugging a phone into the cord you are using. Are you sure this is a DR5?

Marv ccna

Yes, it is a DR5. I tried connecting the mod cord to a phone and it works just fine. I don't know what else to do. If you have any more suggestions or help from anyone that would be great!!! Thank you!

Your only options left are to replace the software, the power supply or the cabinet.
Best you call a tech in so they can troubleshoot, they will resolve issue within the hour.

On the power supply, check voltage between pins 1 and 3 (with the plug out of the Flash). You should see about 24 volts AC rms. Pins 1 and 3 are the two pins farthest apart from each other or at 0 and 180 degrees.

Are you plugging into the Flash jack nearest to the power cord ?

Take a look in the jack and be sure the tines are correctly positioned. Straighten and/or bend if needed and be sure there is nothing in the back of the jack to prevent the plug from seating correctly. The middle two tines are the ones that really matter. Just to be very sure, swap to another patch cord and confirm function on a phone before using on the Flash, in case there is something just a little off normal in the shape of the plug you have now.

Just for one last re-testing, power cycle the KSU and Flash and give them 15 minutes to boot. Then try the f903 and f985 and f983 and see if there is a response.

If the power supply tests ok and with your boot results suggesting the software card is ok, it is starting to look like the cabinet is bad, maybe a patch cord was yanked out and damaged the 4p4c jack solder points, really down to conjecture at this point. At any rate, the diagnostics look like the Flash cannot handshake with a KSU, and given all other tests, it looks like a bad cabinet to me at this point.

The DR5 ksu is an old panel. I had the same power type problems on one. I was able to get the customer to upgrade to a CICS ksu. Will save you a headache down the road.

The way I was able to get the voicemail to work was to get a DS cabinet and to wait 5 to 10 minutes for the voicemail to boot up.
