Problems Changing Chapter Numvers & Generating Index

In FrameMaker 7, when working thru some tutorial exercises, I can't seem to change the Chapter Number that was generated within FM rather than imported with textfile.

Also, when generating an Index from a book file that includes various files--i.e., frontmatter with small Roman numeral (i, ii, iii ... ) page numbering, as well as regular Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3 ... ) for page numbers in main body chapters, I can't get Index to generate.

Page numbers come in for all chapters as small Roman numerals, and when I change to Arabic via Format-->Doc-->Numbering, upon trying to genrate Index, alert box informs that files differ from what's in book.

How am I fouling up?

You need to make your edits in the book file for numbering and not int the FM files, unless from the book file they are set to read from file. The order of precedence is book, then file. I suggest you pick up Sarah O'Keefe and Sheila Loring's book.
