Problems caused by a .doc file

I've got a .doc file that I'm trying to open/convert to WP format, but it keeps crashing WP.

I'm using WP 10.0.0.785, with SP3 and HotPatch4 installed under WinXP on a 2 gig processor with 1 gig of physical memory.

The .doc file is 2.48 MB, mainly because of a number of large color graphics scattered liberally through it.

WP opens the document fine (it just takes a while to convert everything) and seems to display everything fine (but see below).

* If I try to "save" or "save as (wp file)", WP crashes with an "Inssuficient Memory" error. Considering that I have 1 gig of physical memory and 2.5 gigs of virtual/paging memory (and that over 700 MB of the physical memory is free when trying this) I doubt that's really the problem.

* If I browse too far down through the document (or slide the slide bar down too fast) the same thing happens.

* If I try to edit the document, the same thing happens.

* The timed back-up function manages to save a copy of it (.bk) without crashing WP, though...color me mystified.

* The timed back-up, if opened after a crash, exibits the same behaviors as the original if I try to save, edit, or "view too fast".

* I've tried this even after a cold boot (so I know memory's not fragged and cluttered) and had the same results.

Can anyone offer any suggestions or insights?
