Problems After Win NT 4 Server Upgrade

Hi,

I've had this problem for about a month now. My goal is to have IIS on my machine at work so that I can host my own web pages for my web application. (Our normal web server is very unstable and is constantly going down, so I want my work machine to act as a web server.)

Here's some background. I upgraded my Win NT 4.0 Workstation to Win NT 4.0 Server. I'm thinking that if I can install the Server version, I can use IIS (which is really what I want). Although the NT Server upgrade was successful, I did receive one error regarding a driver (setup didn't tell me which).

When I reboot my machine, I receive the following selections in a DOS-like text-based screen:

- Windows NT 4.0 Workstation
- Windows NT 4.0 Workstation (VGA)
- Windows NT Server Installation/Upgrade

I thought this was weird. If I installed Server, what's Workstation still doing there? Anyway, during startup, it does show me the Windows NT Server GUI sign and proceeds with startup.

Here's where my problems begin. Immediately after startup I get a Service Control Manager box,
Service Control Manager: At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use EventViewer to examine the event log for details.

So that's what I did and found the following:

Error Source: intelata
Description: A conflict has been detected between 2 drivers which claimed 2 overlapping I/O port regions. driver intelata, which device <\Device\ScsiPort2.Translated> claimed IO port range with starting address in data address 0x28 and 0x2c, and length in data address 0x30.

Another error,
Error Source: Service Control Manager
Description: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: intelata.

I'm really not an "NT Admin", I'm a web developer who just wants to get to configure a web server. :-( For the past month I've had no success. Everything that's been tried is a bust. Should it really be this hard? What should I do?

Oh, about IIS. Whenever I goto Start / Programs /Microsoft IIS, it gives me the selection to install IIS. When I attempt installation of IIS, files from my C:\WinNT directory begin to get copied, and after trying to copy some files, the install tells me it can't open certain files. I have to end the setup. Also, there are no other applications open, only the install.

If this install of Win NT Server is bad, how do I get back to my regular-old Win NT Workstation? Also, it might help to say that my current Network Admins may be restricting some of my access for files.

Please help. Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Hello scripter73,

NT Workstatin can not be upgraded to NT Server(however the two systems can co-exist on a system, this is called dual-booting)... that would be why you get the choice of OS when you power up your computer.

When you installed the NT4 Server, did you specify the systemdrive\winnt folder for installation ?
If so, this would explain many of the errors you get since the NT Server version of files and drivers would have replaced the NT Workstation files.

Let me know a little more about the steps you performed when installing NT Server and I will see if I can help you more... S. Gagner

As a programmer - your NT admins should set this up for you. if you are doing it on your own - it won't work correctly without you having "Domain Admin" permissions...

Programmers should not delve into the realms of Domain Admins unless they are skilled in the practice. This is common network Policy...

Suck it up, and ask your admin for help - he/she will make it work. No room for "Superman" in a secure network without an admin at your side..
