I have a co-worker running Windows 98 and office 2000. He received an email with an Excel xp file attachment. He opened up the file without problems. He closed out without saving and then went to he desktop and tried to open up a shortcut to a Excel 2000 file. He gets an error telling him he can't open up the file. This is happening to all of his shortcuts on his desktop. Can someone tell me what is happening here and how to fix his problem?
Thanks!

What is the error? File not found?

How does he save the files - if he is saving files he opened as mail attachments, they might well have been opened in temporary folders, which have (gulp) been cleaned up.

One possibility

Tell him to try Tools / Options / Uncheck 'Ignore Other Applications' (If it is checked that is)

If this is the problem then he will currently be able to open files using File / open, just not via doubleclicking a shortcut.

The error says the "properties for this program are unavailable" or the properties settings window comes up.

He didn't save the excel xp file that he opened. He just opened up the attachment and then closed out. The files he is trying to open from his desktop shortcuts aren't connected to his email. They are office 2000 files that he created himself on his computer.

Any ideas as to what the problem really is and how to fix it?

Thanks!

Oops - Tools / Options / General Tab / Uncheck Ignore other apps

Ken:
Thanks for the advice but it was already unchecked. Any other ideas?
Thanks

Sorry about the delay but am working silly hours on a proposal at the moment.

If that doesn't work then, try to re-register Excel

Close Excel first and
On the Windows Taskbar

1 ) Start>Run "excel.exe /unregserver"(no quotes)>OK.
(unregserver is not always needed)
2) Start>Run "excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.
See the space between exe and /regserver

You might have to designate a full path to excel.exe.
In that case Start>Run "C:\yourpath\excel.exe /regserver"(no quotes)>OK.
