Every so often I get no sound when I play a Video CD which I have repeatedly played successfully before. After some fiddling and without remembering quite WHAT I did the problem would go away. I seem to remember I achieved this by loading an older version of Media Player. However with the "automatic updates" from MS I suspect that "solution" is repeatedly over-written. I suspect it may be a codec problem. Hopefully someone has a solution. Thanks in advance.

Simple solution - VLC media player. Plays just about anything you can throw at it without installing any codecs. WMP is kind of a PITA when functioning properly. If you really want to fix WMP, you need to post more info about your system and version of WMP.

Thanks goombawao and strongm I tried both VLC media player AND Media Player Classic (MPC) neither of which provide a solution.

do you have other windows sounds working? What about a music cd? Because VLC should have played a standard mpeg2 or avi file with no issues at all. I used to have an issue where my on board realtek audio device would get it's volume turned to zero, after windows updates sometimes, and I would have to go into the audio manager and turn the volume control back up. I didn't always notice it, because I only use the built in sound card for skype. I have a creative labs x-fi for all other sounds.

Um .. don't think this is a 'no sound' problem, in the sense that you have now tried to suggest.

It is indeed a 'video' problem. Various video formats keep the sound and the video streams seperate (generally in order to ensure that sound and video stay in stynch no matter what the playback rate is).

And sometimes this means that sound does not play (although generally, in my experience, you get the sound but not the picture). And when they don't work together it is more often than not something to do with a codec, as the OP has identified.

Thanks for you input people. Perhaps I should explain the symptoms in more detail.
SOUND works fine in following applications
Windows XP Prof System sounds.
SKYPE.
CD's with MUSIC.
Videos on the H/D.

Whilst providing perfect picture won't provide SOUND from ANY VIDEO CD.

Apologies if this should be a different thread but it might be relevant to this problem.

I find I cannot delete the following programs in the normal manner. Probably because I simply deleted them DIRECTLY from the H/D at some stage. I suspect this has left me with a Registry problem which is now causing some-or-other conflict resulting in my problem.

Install TV PVR
Install TV Utilities
3CX Voice Application Design
3CX Phone.
Adobe Reader X(10.1.0)

Hesitate to fiddle in REGEDIT without knowing what I am doing.

The plot thickens (thins? :))

Codec Detector advises that the following Video Codecs [with their locations on the H/D] "Have not been uninstalled properly."

As this appears to be relevant how can I UN-install them "properly"?

DivXDecoder Filter(C)
Nero Digital Video Encoder
UleadDVD Video decoder.
Ulead DVD Video decoder 2

You could search for a removal tool for them and/or use CCleaner and use the registry cleaner. If you use CCleaner - A) Save changes before FIXING each time and B) Keep running it until nothing to fix. REBOOT after all the fixing.

Test again.

Thanks for that. I found TWO removal tools which appear to be very good ... inevitably and reasonably one is expected to pay for it! :-( I'll try CCleaner and your advice..

Run the removal tools FIRST, then reboot. Then do the CCleaner regimen as specified. I know it's kind of CYA and a PITA to tell you to reboot after the removal tools, but it's not a bad idea to make sure the changes are complete.
