problem with tomcat, hanging and not responding

Hi all,
I have inherited a web application running on tomcat. Everything seems fine and we don't have problem most of the time but sometimes the pages take forever to load and I mean literally forever and the only way to get it running again is to stop and start tomcat. I have looked at the log files in log directory under tomcat dir but couldn't find any error message or unusual output. It would be great if someone could give some hints on where to look and what to look for and what could be the problem. Is there any other log files related to webserver that i should be looking in to?

Whats the CPU doing when this happens ?
How much CPU is the java process that tomcat is running in taking up ?
How much RAM is that process taking ?

Hi Sedj,
thanks for your reply. I haven't checked the CPU performance while the problem is on progress, just because i was so in rush to restart tomcat to get the things going. I will check the next time it happens and will post and greatly appreciate if you could check my posting again.
Just to get the sense what could be the problem: what should i look for, what should CPU and RAM usage tell me?

You should monitor RAM and CPU usuage under normal operations for the java process running tomcat.

Once the error occurs, you have this as a reference, to see if it is out of the ordinary. Before restarting tomcat, you should also copy all the logs so you have a copy of things to look over.
