hey, i'm trying to do some masking so i need to move my picture behind my rectangle mask.. the problem is, the picture - when selected - has a gray outline around it, and i'm unable to stack it behind my rectangle (which has a blue selection box). i'm also unable to mask the picture at all. how is this problem resolved? i can't seem to figure it out, so thanks much to whoever has the answer.

yep! i'm not very adept with illustrator yet, and i assumed that you could cycle objects among layers via stacking - i wasn't aware that each layer's objects stacked idependently of other layer objects. problem fixed though, thanks!

Glad to hear you've got it fixed.

You can use a clipping mask to mask an object if the clipping mask is on a layer above the object, but once the mask is made, object and mask will be on the same layer.
