I'm trying to bring a W2K machine up to specs but I keep hitting a wall with the express installation wizard. I'm connected to the internet, no anti-virus programs running, no firewall running. After the set up wizard checks the configuration and starts the installation process, I get this message: "A connection with the server could not be established". When I click the Retry button, I get this message: "If this error persists after you have clicked retry several times, go to the Windows 2000 Service Pack Web Site and select 'Problems Downloading the Service Pack'. This will give you instructions on how to download a version of the service pack that does not require a web connection."

So I go to the web site mentioned but I can't find anything relating to 'Problems Downloading the Service Pack'. I've even tried finding it through the site search engine but still no joy. Can someone please shed some light on this for me?

Thanks so much...

tviman,

Just out of curiosity, what browser are you using. I normally use Firefox and have had problems with downloads from Microsoft similar to what you are describing. I have found that I have to use Internet Explorer to do Service Pack downloads.

Just a thought.

Ed,

I'm a Mozilla guy myself but knowing Microsoft, I always use IE when applying updates. Thanks for the input!

hmmm ... wonder if this might help. we had a similar problem here, and found it was because the cryptographic (or cryptography) service was not running, and needed to be. The following text, pasted into a .bat file and run, fixed the problem, allowing installation of the Service Pack to complete:

regsvr32 softpub.dll
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 dssenh.dll
regsvr32 rsaenh.dll
regsvr32 gpkcsp.dll
regsvr32 sccbase.dll
regsvr32 slbcsp.dll
regsvr32 cryptdlg.dll
