I have a perl script to run some commands and ftp the resultant logs back to my NT workstation/HPUX machines. It works fine on all the machines I have to connect to except for one running SCO Unixware 7.1.1. I can telnet onto this machine without difficulty but the ftp always fails

Trying manual ftp's I have discovered that the machine will not allow any other machine to ftp on to it; neither can I ftp from it, with one exception - it WILL allow a non-root user to ftp onto one HPUX server we have.

I'm baffled as to how I go about getting the machine to allow me to ftp on to it. I have tried putting an entry in /etc/ftpusers for one of my HPUX servers, but it still does not allow me to ftp on to it from there. I presume there must be some other configuration required. Can anyone assist?

When trying to ftp from my NT workstation I get the following:

ftp <SCO machine name>
Connected to SCO machine name.xxxxx.xxxxxxx.fr
220 SCO machine name FTP server (wu-2.4.2-academ-15) ready.
User ((SCO machine name.xxxxx.xxxxxxx.fr:(none)): myname
530 User myname access denied
login failed.

This is from the ftpd man page:

ftpd authenticates users according to four rules:
* The user name must be in the password data base, /etc/passwd, and
the password must not be null. In this case a password must be
provided by the client before any file operations may be
performed.
* The user name must not appear in the file /etc/ftpusers. A user
name of anonymous or ftp prevents anonymous FTP access.
* Users other than the anonymous FTP user must have a standard shell
(one listed in /etc/shells).
* If the user name is anonymous or ftp, an anonymous FTP account
must be present in the password file (user ftp). In this case the
user is allowed to log in by specifying any password (by
convention this is given as the client host's name).

You seem to be running the wuftpd server on that machine, you'll probably have to refer to its documentation as I think it has more granular access control than the standard daemons. Annihilannic.

Thanks for the information, I will investigate further.
