Hi,
One of my customers has a SAN consisting of several Linux servers and one Windows2000-SP2 server. First, I'll give you a bit of background info:
They run Legato Networker 6.1.3 to backup all these servers to a tape library which is also attached to the SAN. All of the servers have a copy of Networker's "SAN Storage NODE" (SSN) program that allows them to connect to the tape library through the SAN and initiate their own file backups/restore operations. Without SSN, if you want to restore files to the Win2k box, you initiate the restore job on the Networker server and the files get transferred from tape to the Win2k box VIA THE CORPORATE BACKBONE LAN - not the SAN. This makes restores much slower, especially if we need to recover the entire server.
Now for the problem:
When my customer runs a restore job on the Win2k box using SSN, during the restore operation the following things happen:
- Shares are forcibly disconnected
- User data is lost (due to the above)
- The performance of the Win2k box drops to a crawl.
Once the restore is complete, all seems well again.
This Win2k box is the main fileserver and home-directory server for the entire company. There are between 300 and 500 users with mapped shares at any one time.
Any ideas what might be causing this problem? The problem does not happen when we run a SSN on any of the Linux boxes. Legato reckon it's not a Networker/SSN problem. They don't have any other reports of this problem.
Regards,
George.
