Problem with Runing DSum in Report

Hi I was wondering if some one could help me with a problem I'm having with a dsum. I found a really nice example of retiving totals using dsum posted by rsmith but for some reason I cannot get it to work. I am creating a report for my office car usage for the year. I have it split up into quaters. I have put the dsum on the report

=DSum("[Total Costs]","tblMileage Costs","[Car Tag Number] = 1234 [Begin date] between #1/1/2008# and #3/31/2008#")

I have tried it with "1234" and '1234'. At first I was getting nothing now I'm gettin an #error in the field.
