trying to restore a DC from a back up made with ntbackup but been unsuccessful so far. heres the error i get:

"Directory Services could not start because of the following error: The system cannot find the file specified. Error status: 0xc000000f.

Please click Ok to shutdown this system and reboot into Directory Services Restore Mode, check the event log for more detail information"

when i restore it seems that evrything has worked properly but 3 times at the first boot i got this message...any idea what might be the problem?

Thanx

Restoring/backing up a DC should be launched just when AD is offline, ie Directory Servies Restore Mode.
Did you do it in this way? Gia Betiu

If you have other DCs in your domain, don't restore AD. If you already have you can manualy demote the server or rebuild it again.

Let the AD replication come over from the other DCs. CJ

Don't drink and post, save that for driving home!

i did it in directory services restore mode but always the same error...i even tried to restore as a test another DC using veritas and its always the same error message...i have no hair left!!!

Is it the disk configuration the same? NTFS? When you installed AD, where did you set were the DS files (location).
And, are you sure that you saved sytem state? Gia Betiu

What programs were preliminary installed on a server before process of restoration was started? AD is UP or DOWN?

yes from the computer im doing the restore on i got same OS and a bigger NTFS partition which is the same file system as the backed up partition/computer. and yes im sure i saved system state..

Only windows server 2000 running with Active Directory up..no other program

Then I hope to not have a relation with the disk signature used by the WIndows 2k. Then, if you change the partition parameter, the OS will not recognize the new partition.
I had this problem trying to make an image of the system and then put the image back.
As I know from clustering, when you change the disk from a node you need to save it's signature from the disk.

I will have a look at home over some books. Gia Betiu
