Hi Guys,
I have been advised against using probe_scsi_all at ok prompt, why ?

I also want to know the diff between probe_scsi_all and probe_scsi, Is there a difference between there outputs too ?

Is there a way to circumnavigate the problem caused by probe_scsi_all ?

nitinkgoud;

The only time that running probe-scsi-all can be a problem is when the OS was running and the system was brought down then it can hang and it will tell you this when you try to run the command. probe-scsi-all has always been used for low level confirmation that scsi devices are seen. probe-scsi-all shows all scsi devices attached to the system, both internal and external. probe-scsi is used for seeing the internal devices only. Since this is a low level command it is not going to effect any OS, and will not damage the hardware.

In some of the older systems say like an ultra 2 if you put LC drives the probe-scsi will just scroll the screen and you will not see the devices when it prints them to the console.

Thanks

Hi cndcadams,
In our env we always do init 0 to bring the system to OK prompt.
In such cases probe-scsi-all will hang the system.
what do i need to do if i have to run this command? can i do reset-all to flush the register and then try probe-scsi-all?
Also can you please tell me what do you mean by internal and external devices? probe-scsi-all also shows RAM and all, is what i think right?

Also should i use commands like probe-scsi-all and watch-net-all before memory initilisation takes place, if i power on the system?

nitinkgoud;

if you do an init 0 the system will hang when trying probe-scsi or probe-scsi-all and Sun is never going to fix this since it has happened for about 8 years now. You could do 1 of 2 things. setenv auto-boot? false then do a reset or reset-all and when it comes back up to ok prompt run our probe-scsi-all or probe-scsi command. These commands are for the scsi devices so it will show your scsi paths plus the disk units attahced to these. The probe-scsi-all command probes both the onboard scsi devices plus any additional pci or sbus scsi devices and will give you the drives, tapes units, and cdroms attached to these. Probe-scsi will only probe for your internal drives, cdroms and tape units.

This command does not show memory.

Banner command shows the memory.

thanks
