I am having a problem with the print area in Illustrator. The page area in Illustrator is smaller than my printer in capable of, but there seems to be no obvious way to adjust it. I know others have asked similar questions but I cannot find the answer. Does Illustrator restrict the print area to some arbitrary size? I have searched help and forums for "margins", "print area", "page" etc but all to no avail. Any help would be appreciated.

...the print area is defined by the document setup (file > document setup) of the artboard...

...the print area is also defined by media size if the print dialog (file > print)...

...the other area that controls what is printed is the crop area if using CS3 (draw a box, choose "object > crop area > make"), this function has been replaced in CS4 with the function "object > convert to artboards"...

...with the above in mind and no crop areas used if using CS3, then the document setup defines the print area...

...also worth remembering that not all desktop printers can print to the edge of a sheet (known as borderless printing)...

...if it does then you have to set this up in the print dialog box with appropriate settings for your printer...

...with your illustrator artboard smaller than your media size, you have to option to scale the artwork or "fit to page"...

...if using an older version of illustrator, ensure you have "file > page setup" set correctly to your printers media size, then choose "file > print" and apply any scaling you need...

...obviously if your printer isn't capable of printing to the edge of the sheet, then you will have elements chopped off when trying to "fit to page"...
