Hi,
I have
A Linksys Wireless G ADSL Gateway - (WAG54G)
A laptop - Toshiba Tekra A4 - Win XP Pro SP2.
A Standard Desktop - Win 2000 Server SP4
all connected to a home network.

Ive set up port forwarding to the Desktop
e.g Port 80 - HTTP
Port 21 - FTP
Port 3389 - Remote Desktop

Problem - Everytime i connect my laptop to the home network it adds ' svchost (192.168.1.65:2963) ' to the port forwarding. It seems to add it 3/4 times, and by doing this a couple of times it knocks of my original setting Port80, 21 etc.

Does anyone know whats going on? Its always worked fine with previous laptops.

Any help will be apreciated !!!!

Thanks

That's probably Windows Messenger via UPnP. It sholdn't have any effect on your other forwards.

Hi, it does seem to have an effect because i've only got a max number of port forwarding as far as i am aware, (about 20). When i connect my laptop to the home network it adds
' svchost (192.168.1.65:2963) '
to the port forwarding about 3/4 times all using different ports, therefore if i reconnect my laptop 5/6 times it pushes my original settings off to allow for the new settings

hope this makes sense !!!

Do you have version 1 or version 2 of this device? According the online manual for version 1, on the 'Aplications & Gaming' tab, Single Port Forwarding section, there are sections for HTTP, FTP and several others that are fixed at the top of the forwarding list - they don't move off when other things are automagically (thanks bcastner) added. Are you saying these items move off the list, or do you see something other than what's shown on the Linksys web site?

Off the top of my head i think its version 2.

Yes these items are moving off the list.

Ill have a look on the linksys website, to see if i can find anything out

If those 'fixed' items are moving off the list, then there's something wrong with the firmware. Just to make sure that we're talking about the same thing - you did not actually type in the 80 or 21, right, you just enabled the ones that are already there.

The ones that were already are long gone, because they have been pushed of the list by this 'svchost', so the ones i have on now, i have manually created.

Can you send me the link to the linksys page you are looking at !!!

ftp://ftp.linksys.com/pdf/wag54g-ug.pdf This should be the same as the user guide you got when you bought the device. Look at figure 5-26 on pdf page 40 (printed page 33) - those fixed applications move off the list?

hi, the pdf file shows examples of what can be set up as port forwarding and these are the defaults, but there are being automatically moved off the list.

some examples of what is being added

Application - svchost (192.168.1.65:3184)
External Port - 39373
Internal Port - 3184
Type - UDP

Application - svchost (192.168.1.65:3034)
External Port - 13258
Internal Port - 3034
Type - UDP

Application - svchost
External Port - 16587
Internal Port - 2729
Type - UDP

everytime they are different ports
